Watch the mind move through an ordinary day. It anticipates a desired result, mourns what has been lost, tries to hold on to one experience, and pushes away another. It can be elated by praise and furious at an obstacle. Ashtavakra places these movements in one sequence because the underlying issue is not whether a feeling looks pleasant or unpleasant. The issue is the mind’s being caught by its own demands. Even renunciation appears in the list: rejecting something can be as possessive a reaction as acquiring it if we make our completeness depend on getting rid of it. The verse therefore distinguishes the inner grip from the outward act. It does not require emotional numbness or suggest that grief after a loss is a moral failing. Happiness, anger, and sorrow still belong to human life. The nondual inquiry asks whether these movements must define the very Self that is aware of them. “Bondage” here names identification and compulsive fixation; it is not a judgment on people who are facing real pain. The next verse will describe liberation by reversing this list, inviting the reader to notice the quality of freedom rather than imitate a blank exterior.

The second verse mirrors the first almost word for word, but with repeated negations. Desire, grief, rejecting, acquiring, elation, and anger no longer rule the mind. This can sound like a demand never to feel anything, yet that reading would miss the contrast between having an experience and being inwardly compelled by it. A free person may respond to loss, act to prevent harm, or appreciate a welcome event; the teaching concerns dependence on these fluctuations for one’s fundamental identity. The symmetry between “not rejecting” and “not acquiring” is especially telling. Spiritual progress itself can become something to grasp at, while a dramatic renunciation can conceal another kind of craving. Neither posture, by itself, establishes freedom. The verse asks us to consider a mind not constantly drawing a boundary around the Self with the labels “I must get this” and “I must get rid of that.” This is a philosophical portrait of liberation in Advaita, not a clinical instruction to suppress grief, abandon discernment, or become indifferent to injustice. Its quietness is an absence of captivity, not the disappearance of care.

After listing six contrasting mental movements, this verse gives a more general account: attachment to a dṛṣṭi. The Sanskrit word can point toward what is seen or a standpoint through which one sees. The historical Hindi interpretation tends toward perceived objects, while many modern philosophical readers hear adherence to views or doctrines. The source wording permits an editorial discussion of both, but the precise scope deserves specialist review. The practical insight can be seen in a discussion where an idea stops being something to examine and becomes the proof of who we are. Evidence then feels threatening, and disagreement turns personal. The same grip can form around possessions, identities, or spiritual claims. To be unattached to all standpoints does not mean refusing to think, comparing all claims as equally true, or giving up standards of evidence. The distinction is between using discernment and making an opinion into a fixed self. What becomes free is not intelligence but its bondage to the need always to defend or possess. The verse thus unites the previous pair: whether we cling through desire or through rejection, the deeper problem is attachment.

The conclusion is disarmingly short: no “I,” freedom; an “I,” bondage. The verse is not asking a person to erase their existence, lose the ability to use ordinary first-person language, or deny their own worth. In its Advaita setting, the challenged “I” is the contracted ego-claim that identifies the whole Self with a separate, needy owner of experiences. That owner must collect some things, reject others, and protect its viewpoints. Thus the fourth verse gathers up all three before it. The word helayā adds an important nuance: take this insight lightly, with ease, rather than as one more exhausting task. If we strive to become perfectly detached as a badge of superiority, the project of liberation can become another object of grasping. “Do not take; do not cast away” works here at the level of ultimate attachment. It does not forbid eating when hungry, refusing harm, accepting assistance, or making responsible decisions in the world. Those actions need not be fueled by the conviction that the Self is incomplete until it wins or loses a particular object. This last line leaves the reader with a subtle test: can a necessary action be performed without making it the prison of “me and mine”?
