Much of daily life is spent distinguishing what ought to be done from what should be avoided. That practical distinction matters: we still need to make decisions and care for people affected by them. Ashtavakra is questioning something deeper—the hope that the mind will become finally secure when every pair of opposing demands has been settled. A completed task leaves another undone; a rule devised to end anxiety may create a new anxiety about following the rule perfectly. The invitation to nirveda, dispassion, is to see this revolving pattern without making it the definition of the Self. The striking term avratī, “not bound by a vow,” prevents renunciation from becoming yet another rigid performance. The verse is not permission to neglect commitments or behave carelessly. Rather, it asks whether responsible action can happen without the inward claim, “Only once all this is resolved can I be at peace.” This prepares the chapter’s repeated contrast between practical functioning and identification with its changing results.

The verse groups together three hungers: the craving to preserve life, the appetite for enjoyment, and bubhutsā, the desire to know. They look different. One seeks security, another experience, and another understanding. Yet all three can become projects through which the mind tries to establish a lasting sense of completion. Ashtavakra says that simply observing worldly activity may loosen their hold for a rare person. The claim is not that staying alive, eating, learning, or intellectual inquiry are bad. Most importantly, the subsiding of jīvitecchā is a philosophical image of freedom from compulsive clinging, not an endorsement of self-harm, hopelessness, or disregard for life. The last desire is especially subtle: spiritual insight itself may be pursued as a possession that would make someone superior or permanently safe. Watching how each achievement breeds another demand can invite a less anxious relationship with inquiry. One may still study and act with curiosity, but without expecting the next answer to supply an identity. Here dispassion grows from seeing clearly, not from contempt for living beings.

This verse deliberately uses severe language: the world is impermanent, affected by three forms of affliction, insubstantial, and something to be relinquished. Read without context, it might seem to despise life itself. In the nondual argument, however, the target is the attempt to find an unchanging foundation in changing experiences. Traditional commentators connect the three tāpas with suffering arising within body and mind, from other beings or circumstances, and from wider natural forces. These categories are ways of noticing vulnerability, not a claim that every experience is equally miserable. A friendship, a work of art, or an act of care can be genuinely meaningful at the human level even though none can serve as an everlasting definition of the Self. The strong words asāra, nindita, and heya require independent interpretive review. This draft reads them as challenging ultimate dependence, not demanding disgust toward other people or abandonment of moral duties. When we no longer require the temporary to become permanent, the expectation that drives agitation can relax. Such peace follows discernment rather than denial.

We often postpone peace into another stage of life: after the examination, after the job is secure, after retirement, after the family difficulty ends. Ashtavakra asks whether there has ever been an age or time in which human beings no longer encounter opposites. Their shapes change, but gain and loss, approval and criticism, comfort and discomfort continue to arise. The verb upekṣya must not be read as neglecting people or suppressing a necessary response. The verse points toward refusing to hand ultimate authority to the opposites themselves. Likewise yathāprāptavartī, living according to what comes, is not a command to surrender judgment. Illness may require treatment, wrongdoing may require resistance, and responsibilities still call for work. The freedom proposed is inward: do what circumstances call for without making the arrival of a completely conflict-free circumstance the price of being at peace. Fulfillment is not achieved by locating a magical future period. It lies in a different relationship with time and experience.

Across spiritual traditions, respected teachers propose different disciplines and different accounts of the path. Even those who seek the same freedom may disagree sharply. The fifth verse does not offer a catalog of doctrines. Instead, it notices what happens when we see their plurality clearly. A conviction that one particular formulation must carry our entire identity can begin to loosen. Nirveda here need not mean contempt for scholarship or the lazy conclusion that all teachings are equally true. We can compare evidence, recognize a strong argument, and remain committed to a practice. The question is whether the commitment becomes an egoic demand that no alternative perspective may even be heard. When a view is no longer the possession that proves who we are, disagreement can be examined without immediate alarm. The verse describes peace born of dispassion, not indifference to truth. It continues the fourth verse’s theme: when opposing positions no longer determine the Self, inquiry may become more open, more careful, and less burdened by the need to win.

After observing that revered teachers disagree, the text turns to what makes a teacher genuinely helpful. The criterion is not simply a title or allegiance to a school. The compact expression mūrtiparijñānaṃ caitanyasya admits more than one philosophical unpacking and calls for specialist Sanskrit review. In this first draft, it refers to helping someone recognize the nature or manifestation of consciousness. The teaching is joined to nirveda and samatā: dispassion and evenness of mind. A true guide should lessen fixation and clarify inquiry rather than strengthen dependence on a personality. The phrase about carrying someone across saṃsṛti is a spiritual metaphor for moving beyond bondage, not evidence that a person possesses supernatural power or may demand unquestioning obedience. The verse does not remove the need for ethical accountability, careful examination, or personal boundaries in a teacher–student relationship. Its emphasis is functional and philosophical: does the encounter encourage insight, steadiness, and freedom from attachment? This question offers a meaningful bridge between the chapter’s many competing viewpoints and its final instructions.

The verse shifts from discussions about views and teachers to a direct act of looking. In the traditional language of Indian philosophy, the world of forms is described through the bhūtas, the constituent elements. What seems like a fixed, separate thing is a changing configuration. By attending to that fact, the reader is invited to stop treating every form as a permanent foundation for “me.” The instruction paśya—“see”—is experiential, but it is not a demand to deny physical realities or a substitute for scientific explanation. The five-element framework belongs to the philosophical context of the verse. “In that very instant” suggests the sudden clarity of recognition rather than a promise that all difficulties will disappear from daily life. A person established in their own nature can still look after the body, respond to other people, and make decisions. What has changed is the identification that took transient structures to be the whole of the witnessing Self. Thus the teaching translates the chapter’s discussion of dispassion into a method of clear seeing.

The last verse makes a daring identification: vāsanā itself is saṃsāra. In this context vāsanā means deeply conditioned impressions or tendencies that impel repeated wanting, fearing, grasping, and avoidance. It is not limited to sexual desire, nor does it simply mean having preferences. A change of job, place, or possession may leave the inward pattern of dependence untouched; the same demand for lasting security can attach to a new object. Ashtavakra therefore locates the source of bondage in the recurring fixation rather than in the mere existence of a world. The imperative to release every tendency should not be turned into another campaign of violent self-suppression. Seeing how identification works may itself loosen its authority. The final compound and clause, tattyāgo vāsanātyāgāt sthitir adya yathā tathā, have interpretive and syntactic questions that remain open for expert review. The present reading suggests resting where one presently is after relinquishing the inward grip. This does not require staying in danger, refusing help, or ignoring one’s responsibilities. Ordinary changes may still be wise; liberation is not equated with outward paralysis.
