ShivGoraksh English Translation
Having truly known the Self as indestructible and one, how can you, a steadfast knower of the Self, still delight in accumulating wealth?
Roman reading
avinaashinamaatmaanamekam vijnaaya tattvatah | tavaatmajnaanasya dheerasya kathamarthaarjane ratih ||3.1||avināśinamātmānamekaṃ vijñāya tattvataḥ | tavātmajñānasya dhīrasya kathamarthārjane ratiḥ ||3.1||
Explanation
ShivGoraksh Simple English Explanation
After Janaka’s declarations of insight, Ashtavakra examines how that insight affects attachment. The verse questions delight in wealth as an ultimate source of identity or safety; it is not a blanket prohibition on earning or responsibly using money. Its sharp question asks whether one’s account of the indestructible Self has actually changed what one clings to.

ShivGoraksh English Translation
Remarkably, ignorance of the Self gives rise to attachment to objects grasped through delusion, just as mistaking a shell for silver produces greed.
Roman reading
aatmaajnaanaadaho preetirvishayabhramagochare | shukterajnaanato lobho yathaa rajatavibhrame ||3.2||ātmājñānādaho prītirviṣayabhramagocare | śukterajñānato lobho yathā rajatavibhrame ||3.2||
Explanation
ShivGoraksh Simple English Explanation
A shell glitters, someone takes it for silver, and desire follows the mistake. The example distinguishes what appears from the value projected onto it. Ashtavakra is not denying that ordinary objects can be useful; he is showing how misidentification can inflate them into promises of lasting fulfillment. Seeing clearly weakens the greed built upon the error.

ShivGoraksh English Translation
Knowing “I am that in which this universe appears like waves in the ocean,” why do you still rush about as though impoverished?
Roman reading
vishvam sphurati yatredam tarangaa iva saagare | so’hamasmeeti vijnaaya kim deena iva dhaavasi ||3.3||viśvaṃ sphurati yatredaṃ taraṅgā iva sāgare | so’hamasmīti vijñāya kiṃ dīna iva dhāvasi ||3.3||
Explanation
ShivGoraksh Simple English Explanation
Waves arise in an ocean without making the ocean incomplete. Ashtavakra applies that picture to a seeker who claims to know awareness as the ground of experience yet still chases fulfillment as though fundamentally lacking something. The criticism is of compulsive inward poverty, not of ordinary effort or purposeful work.

ShivGoraksh English Translation
Even after hearing that the Self is pure and supremely beautiful awareness, one who remains excessively absorbed in sensual gratification clouds that insight.
Roman reading
shrutvaapi shuddhachaitanyamaatmaanamatisundaram | upasthe’tyantasamsakto maalinyamadhigachchhati ||3.4||śrutvāpi śuddhacaitanyamātmānamatisundaram | upasthe’tyantasaṃsakto mālinyamadhigacchati ||3.4||
Explanation
ShivGoraksh Simple English Explanation
The term upastha refers specifically to the sexual organ or sexual gratification. Ashtavakra’s concern is excessive fixation despite having heard the teaching about awareness. The text’s severe language is best read as a critique of compulsive attachment rather than as a claim that bodies, intimacy, or sexuality are inherently impure. Hearing a teaching and embodying it are not the same.

ShivGoraksh English Translation
It is astonishing that a sage who knows the Self in all beings, and all beings in the Self, should still retain possessiveness.
Roman reading
sarvabhooteshu chaatmaanam sarvabhootaani chaatmani | munerjaanata aashcharyam mamatvamanuvartate ||3.5||sarvabhūteṣu cātmānaṃ sarvabhūtāni cātmani | munerjānata āścaryaṃ mamatvamanuvartate ||3.5||
Explanation
ShivGoraksh Simple English Explanation
Knowing the Self in all beings should challenge possessiveness. Ashtavakra draws a distinction between care and ownership: one can love someone without reducing that person to an extension of one’s ego. The verse tests whether nondual vision changes how a person relates to others, rather than remaining merely a lofty statement.

ShivGoraksh English Translation
How astonishing that one established in the highest nonduality and intent on liberation should still be ruled by craving and unsettled by habits of pleasure.
Roman reading
aasthitah paramaadvaitam mokshaarthe’pi vyavasthitah | aashcharyam kaamavashago vikalah kelishikshayaa ||3.6||āsthitaḥ paramādvaitaṃ mokṣārthe’pi vyavasthitaḥ | āścaryaṃ kāmavaśago vikalaḥ keliśikṣayā ||3.6||
Explanation
ShivGoraksh Simple English Explanation
The teacher contrasts professed nondual insight with behavior still ruled by desire. Habit can persist even when a person has a convincing philosophical vocabulary. The verse invites honest self-observation—whether cravings dictate choices—rather than a blanket condemnation of every pleasure or a license to judge others.

ShivGoraksh English Translation
How strange that someone, recognizing the rising craving as an enemy of insight and being frail before time, should still seek it.
Roman reading
udbhootam jnaanadurmitramavadhaaryaatidurbalah | aashcharyam kaamamaakaankshet kaalamantamanushritah ||3.7||udbhūtaṃ jñānadurmitramavadhāryātidurbalaḥ | āścaryaṃ kāmamākāṅkṣet kālamantamanuśritaḥ ||3.7||
Explanation
ShivGoraksh Simple English Explanation
The verse links the fragility of human life with desire that interferes with clear seeing. Recognizing a craving as an obstacle does not guarantee freedom from it. Rather than cultivating fear of death, the passage sharpens a question of priorities: why surrender limited time and attention to what one already recognizes as entrapping?

ShivGoraksh English Translation
How remarkable that one detached from rewards here and hereafter, discerning the lasting from the transient and longing for liberation, should fear liberation itself.
Roman reading
ihaamutra viraktasya nityaanityavivekinah | aashcharyam mokshakaamasya mokshaadeva vibheeshikaa ||3.8||ihāmutra viraktasya nityānityavivekinaḥ | āścaryaṃ mokṣakāmasya mokṣādeva vibhīṣikā ||3.8||
Explanation
ShivGoraksh Simple English Explanation
The paradox is psychological as well as philosophical. Someone may sincerely long for release yet fear losing familiar roles, control, or self-image. Ashtavakra asks the aspirant to notice this hidden resistance. Distinguishing the lasting from the transient therefore includes examining attachments that masquerade as spiritual aspirations.

ShivGoraksh English Translation
A steady sage, whether enjoying pleasure or undergoing distress, sees the Self alone and is neither carried away by gratification nor overcome by anger.
Roman reading
dheerastu bhojyamaano’pi peedyamaano’pi sarvadaa | aatmaanam kevalam pashyan na tushyati na kupyati ||3.9||dhīrastu bhojyamāno’pi pīḍyamāno’pi sarvadā | ātmānaṃ kevalaṃ paśyan na tuṣyati na kupyati ||3.9||
Explanation
ShivGoraksh Simple English Explanation
Pleasure and hardship both occur in life, but the sage does not let either determine ultimate identity. This is equanimity, not numbness or an inability to enjoy life. Nor does the verse require someone to endure abuse or avoid seeking help; it describes a philosophical stance toward experience, not a rule against protecting oneself.

ShivGoraksh English Translation
A great-souled person sees even the movements of their own body as they would another body; why should praise or blame disturb such a person?
Roman reading
cheshtamaanam shareeram svam pashyatyanyashareeravat | samstave chaapi nindaayaam katham kshubhyet mahaashayah ||3.10||ceṣṭamānaṃ śarīraṃ svaṃ paśyatyanyaśarīravat | saṃstave cāpi nindāyāṃ kathaṃ kṣubhyet mahāśayaḥ ||3.10||
Explanation
ShivGoraksh Simple English Explanation
Seeing the body as one sees another body is a way of loosening identification, not despising or neglecting it. Praise and criticism then need not create an inflated or shattered self-image. The verse does not forbid learning from criticism; it questions the agitation that comes from making public approval the measure of one’s being.

ShivGoraksh English Translation
How could a sage of steady understanding, seeing the world as māyā and no longer dazzled by it, tremble in fear even when death approaches?
Roman reading
maayaamaatramidam vishvam pashyan vigatakautukah | api sannihite mrityau katham trasyati dheeradheeh ||3.11||māyāmātramidaṃ viśvaṃ paśyan vigatakautukaḥ | api sannihite mṛtyau kathaṃ trasyati dhīradhīḥ ||3.11||
Explanation
ShivGoraksh Simple English Explanation
Within this nondual teaching, māyā questions the world’s independent ultimate status; it does not make ordinary events irrelevant. Someone who does not reduce the Self to bodily change may relate differently to mortality. This is a philosophical ideal, not a criticism of people who fear death, nor a reason to neglect medical care or personal safety.

Roman reading

Explanation
ShivGoraksh Simple English Explanation
Nairāśya here concerns frustrated expectations or absence of worldly hope, not necessarily the modern clinical condition of depression. The sage’s contentment is not dependent on every wish being met. Ashtavakra praises freedom from the need to make favorable outcomes the final verdict on one’s worth.

ShivGoraksh English Translation
A steady sage who naturally knows that the seen world has no independent ultimate substance—why would such a person cling to the divisions “this must be taken” and “that must be rejected”?
Roman reading
svabhaavaadeva jaanaati drishyametanna kinchana | idam graahyamidam tyaajyam sa kim pashyati dheeradheeh ||3.13||svabhāvādeva jānāti dṛśyametanna kiñcana | idaṃ grāhyamidaṃ tyājyaṃ sa kiṃ paśyati dhīradhīḥ ||3.13||
Explanation
ShivGoraksh Simple English Explanation
The 1911 print appears to use jānāti (“knows”) where a digital comparison has jānāno (“knowing”); that reading still needs formal collation. The argument concerns the ego’s rigid insistence on acquisition and rejection. It does not cancel ordinary ethical judgment or practical choice, but questions the inward compulsion attached to them.

ShivGoraksh English Translation
For one whose inner defilements have been relinquished, who is free from dualistic agitation and expectation, enjoyment arriving by chance brings neither suffering nor possessive elation.
Roman reading
antastyaktakashaayasya nirdvandvasya niraashishah | yadrichchhayaagato bhogo na duhkhaaya na tushtaye ||3.14||antastyaktakaṣāyasya nirdvandvasya nirāśiṣaḥ | yadṛcchayāgato bhogo na duḥkhāya na tuṣṭaye ||3.14||
Explanation
ShivGoraksh Simple English Explanation
The closing verse distinguishes an experience that happens naturally from craving that demands it. A settled person can receive what comes without building a fragile identity around it. Neither sorrow nor elation dominates. The teaching values freedom from grasping rather than a refusal to feel, care, or respond to the world.
