Panchang & Calendar Methodology

How the calculated Calendar uses cities, sunrise and North Indian conventions, and where its limits remain.

Updated: 26 October 2026

A calculated reference Calendar

The public Calendar offers model-computed Panchang and supported observances for 2026–2028. It uses the installed panchang-ts astronomical engine with a pinned configuration and integrity checks. It is a provisional educational reference, not independently certified astronomical or ritual accuracy. A small comparison sample cannot verify the entire date range.

City, timezone and the day

Choose Delhi, Mumbai, Varanasi, Ujjain, Haridwar, Kolkata, Chennai or Bengaluru. All eight reference cities use Asia/Kolkata (Indian Standard Time). Sunrise, sunset and the relationship between a lunar transition and sunrise depend on location. The model uses reference coordinates and an idealized horizon; local terrain, buildings, elevation and atmospheric conditions can alter observed rise/set times. “Today” follows the selected city's timezone.

Tithi and lunar months

Tithi is based on the relative angular position of the Moon and Sun. A Tithi need not begin at midnight or last a civil day. The selected-day panel distinguishes the Tithi at sunrise from later transitions and shows complete start/end boundaries when the calculation can determine them. A missing boundary must not be read as an exact sunrise start. Lunar month labels follow the North Indian full-moon-ending, or Purnimanta, convention.

Festival selection

Festival articles and the monthly Calendar use the same calculation service. Observances depend on both astronomy and a chosen rule: sunrise, evening or another defined window can produce different civil dates. Different regional, Smarta, Vaishnava and other traditions can disagree. Some skipped-sunrise assignments remain unresolved. Sharad Purnima has a documented observance-selection discrepancy awaiting further comparison; do not treat its current date as universally settled. A missing event is not proof that no tradition observes a festival that day.

Moon symbols and unsupported timings

Moon illustrations are indicative appearances derived from the model at sunrise, not a telescope view or a guarantee of observed illumination. The site does not supply personalized muhurta, Parana, Ghatasthapana or initiation-specific timing. A festival date alone does not establish the correct performance time for a particular household or institution.

Using and questioning results

Use the Calendar to choose a city and date, and the Festival Directory for context. For important observances, compare your local tradition and a suitable published Panchang. To report a discrepancy, send the city, date, field, reference value and source to akhileshsaini.com@gmail.com; include the convention when known. We preserve evidence and distinguish an astronomical difference from a rule-selection difference rather than change results simply to match another website.
