यथातथोपदेशेन कृतार्थः सत्त्वबुद्धिमान् । आजीवमपि जिज्ञासुः परस्तत्र विमुह्यति ॥१५.१॥

ShivGoraksh English Translation

A person with a clear and receptive understanding may find fulfilment even through a simple instruction; another may inquire for a lifetime and still remain confused about the same truth.

Roman reading

yathaatathopadeshena kritaarthah sattvabuddhimaan | aajeevamapi jijnaasuh parastatra vimuhyati ||15.1||yathātathopadeśena kṛtārthaḥ sattvabuddhimān | ājīvamapi jijñāsuḥ parastatra vimuhyati ||15.1||

Explanation

ShivGoraksh Simple English Explanation

The verse contrasts readiness to understand with the sheer length of a search. Its emphasis is not that questioning is futile, nor that some people have less human worth. A prepared mind can recognize the point of a short teaching because it looks carefully at experience instead of collecting words for their own sake. Someone else may be diligent yet continually replace one question with another. Learning still requires patience, dialogue and intellectual honesty; the warning concerns inquiry that never comes to rest in insight.

ShivGoraksh English Translation

Freedom is the fading of possessive relish for sense-objects; bondage is the mind’s clinging enjoyment of them. Understand this much, and then act as you see fit.

Roman reading

moksho vishayavairasyam bandho vaishayiko rasah | etaavadeva vijnaanam yathechchhasi tathaa kuru ||15.2||mokṣo viṣayavairasyaṃ bandho vaiṣayiko rasaḥ | etāvadeva vijñānaṃ yathecchasi tathā kuru ||15.2||

Explanation

ShivGoraksh Simple English Explanation

The contrast is between ordinary contact with experience and dependence upon it. One can eat, work, enjoy beauty or fulfil a responsibility without making any of these the condition of personal completeness. The word vairasya need not be read as hatred of the world; it points to losing the compulsive appetite that turns enjoyment into captivity. The closing freedom to choose does not erase responsibility for actions. Rather, discernment should continue after the pressure of craving has eased.

ShivGoraksh English Translation

This insight into reality can make even an eloquent, clever and energetic person appear mute, dull and inactive; hence those hungry for enjoyment tend to turn away from it.

Roman reading

Explanation

ShivGoraksh Simple English Explanation

Ashtavakra uses a deliberately unsettling contrast. The verse is not evidence that realization destroys intelligence or makes neglect desirable. A person previously driven to exhibit brilliance, win every argument or remain perpetually busy may no longer need those displays, which can look like idleness to an onlooker. The comparison in mūka-jaḍālasam deserves careful grammatical reading, especially its appearance-oriented force. Practical care and obligations do not disappear. The historical ending bubhukṣubhiḥ also needs collation against comparison texts that have bubhukṣabhiḥ.

ShivGoraksh English Translation

You are not the body, nor is the body your ultimate possession; you are not, in the deepest sense, the enjoyer or doer. You are awareness, the ever-present witness. Live without dependence.

Roman reading

na tvam deho na te deho bhoktaa kartaa na vaa bhavaan | chidroopo’si sadaa saakshee nirapekshah sukham chara ||15.4||na tvaṃ deho na te deho bhoktā kartā na vā bhavān | cidrūpo’si sadā sākṣī nirapekṣaḥ sukhaṃ cara ||15.4||

Explanation

ShivGoraksh Simple English Explanation

The instruction moves the question of identity from the body and its changing roles to the knowing presence in which those roles are noticed. This is a metaphysical claim within Advaita, not a claim that the body requires no food, medical care or ethical restraint. At the everyday level, choices still affect other people and carry consequences. The verse asks whether those processes define the whole of what one is. Its invitation to move happily comes from loosening that identification rather than evading ordinary accountability.

ShivGoraksh English Translation

Attraction and aversion are movements of the mind; you are not ultimately confined to that mind. You are knowing awareness, free from fixed divisions and change. Rest in that freedom.

Roman reading

raagadveshau manodharmau na manaste kadaachana | nirvikalpo’si bodhaatmaa nirvikaarah sukham chara ||15.5||rāgadveṣau manodharmau na manaste kadācana | nirvikalpo’si bodhātmā nirvikāraḥ sukhaṃ cara ||15.5||

Explanation

ShivGoraksh Simple English Explanation

Liking and disliking happen, often before we choose them. The verse challenges the reflex that converts each passing reaction into an absolute self-definition. When anger appears, for example, it can be recognized without declaring that anger is the entire truth of oneself. This witnessing does not require emotional numbness. Indeed, distinguishing awareness from an impulse can create room to respond more carefully to people and circumstances. The freedom described is not the extinction of ordinary psychological life.

ShivGoraksh English Translation

Recognize the Self in all beings and all beings in the Self. Then be free of egoic self-assertion and possessiveness, and be at ease.

Roman reading

Explanation

ShivGoraksh Simple English Explanation

This verse carries nonduality into the way one regards others. Its claim of shared underlying awareness should not be reduced to a pleasant private feeling. If others are not ultimately alien, contempt and possessive domination lose their justification. Yet everyday distinctions between people remain meaningful: their needs, boundaries and consent require respect. Nirmama means loosening the insistence that another person exists as an extension of one’s ownership, not ceasing to care. The insight is meant to free relationships from egocentric grasping.

ShivGoraksh English Translation

You are the very reality in which this world appears, as waves appear upon an ocean. Have no doubt of that, embodiment of awareness; become free of inward fever.

Roman reading

vishvam sphurati yatredam tarangaa iva saagare | tattvameva na sandehashchinmoorte vijvaro bhava ||15.7||viśvaṃ sphurati yatredaṃ taraṅgā iva sāgare | tattvameva na sandehaścinmūrte vijvaro bhava ||15.7||

Explanation

ShivGoraksh Simple English Explanation

Waves are distinguishable in shape and movement, yet no wave is a substance separate from water. Ashtavakra uses that image to explain the relationship between changing appearances and the underlying awareness he identifies as the Self. The address cinmūrte makes the instruction intensely personal. The release from “fever” is a metaphor for agitation and existential distress, not a substitute for medical care. The verse invites recognition of a common basis beneath apparent multiplicity, while leaving its philosophical argument open to careful study.

ShivGoraksh English Translation

Trust this, dear one, and do not fall into confusion here: you are the glorious Self whose nature is knowing, beyond the fluctuations of nature.

Roman reading

shraddhasva taata shraddhasva naatra moham kurushva bhoh | jnaanasvaroopo bhagavaanaatmaa tvam prakriteh parah ||15.8||śraddhasva tāta śraddhasva nātra mohaṃ kuruṣva bhoḥ | jñānasvarūpo bhagavānātmā tvaṃ prakṛteḥ paraḥ ||15.8||

Explanation

ShivGoraksh Simple English Explanation

The repeated “trust” expresses the urgency of a teacher who wants the listener to stop treating the Self as a remote object to obtain. It need not authorize uncritical submission to a teacher’s personal claims. The dignity of the Self, described here as bhagavān, belongs to the philosophical argument about consciousness, not to an entitlement to control others. To be beyond prakṛti means not being exhausted by changing conditions, while continuing to live responsibly amid those conditions. Faith can work alongside reflection rather than abolishing it.

ShivGoraksh English Translation

The body, wrapped in the qualities of nature, remains for a while, arrives and departs; the Self neither comes nor goes. Why grieve for it as though it travelled?

Roman reading

gunaih samveshtito dehastishthatyaayaati yaati cha | aatmaa na gantaa naagantaa kimenamanushochasi ||15.9||guṇaiḥ saṃveṣṭito dehastiṣṭhatyāyāti yāti ca | ātmā na gantā nāgantā kimenamanuśocasi ||15.9||

Explanation

ShivGoraksh Simple English Explanation

The verse sets the body’s changing condition beside the claimed immobility of awareness. It is not an injunction to dismiss illness, bereavement or the bodily needs of living people. Grief is a real human experience that can be met with care. The philosophical question is whether the witnessing Self should be thought of as an object that enters and exits space like a body. Within Advaita, that identification is denied. The verse speaks to ultimate identity, not to indifference toward embodied life.

ShivGoraksh English Translation

Let the body last until the end of an age, or let it pass away today: what increase or loss could there be in you, whose nature is awareness alone?

Roman reading

Explanation

ShivGoraksh Simple English Explanation

This stark contrast concerns two different ways of thinking about time. Bodies have lifespans; the Self as portrayed here is not measured by bodily duration. Nothing in the line makes the length of a human life unimportant or warrants taking risks with health and safety. Rather, it asks whether our deepest worth increases with longevity or diminishes as the body changes. The verse tries to remove existential dependence upon time, while everyday duties of preservation and compassion remain intact.

ShivGoraksh English Translation

In you, the limitless ocean, let the wave of the world arise or subside by its nature; neither gain nor damage belongs to your essential being.

Roman reading

Explanation

ShivGoraksh Simple English Explanation

The ocean imagery returns, but now the focus is on what cannot be augmented by appearance or diminished by disappearance. Events still arise, and particular people can truly suffer or flourish in everyday terms. The claim is that the underlying awareness has not become larger when a fortunate wave appears or smaller when an unfortunate one passes. This distinction can soften possessive identification with outcomes. It does not erase the need to respond intelligently and kindly to changing circumstances.

ShivGoraksh English Translation

Dear one, you are awareness itself, and this world is not separate from that reality. For whom, by what means and where could the ultimate compulsion to reject or acquire arise?

Roman reading

Explanation

ShivGoraksh Simple English Explanation

The paired notions heya and upādeya concern rejecting and taking up. In daily life, wise discrimination still matters: one avoids harm and accepts help. The verse targets a subtler compulsion—the belief that one’s deepest completion depends on acquiring a particular experience or erasing another. From the standpoint of nondual identity, the imagined separation prompting that hunger falls away. It is a metaphysical reorientation, not the cancellation of ordinary judgment or moral choice.

ShivGoraksh English Translation

In you—the one, undiminishing, peaceful and stainless space of awareness—where could birth, action or ego ultimately be located?

Roman reading

Explanation

ShivGoraksh Simple English Explanation

The image cidākāśa, the space of consciousness, gives the reader a way to think about openness in which events become known. Clouds occupy the sky without turning the sky into a cloud; likewise, experiences do not exhaust awareness. The rhetorical questions concern the Self as an ultimate reality. They need not deny the observable fact that people are born, act and bear consequences. Instead, the text asks whether these events define the timeless witness. This keeps its metaphysical point distinct from everyday accountability.

ShivGoraksh English Translation

In everything you see, it is ultimately your own awareness that shines forth. Are bracelets, armlets and anklets made of gold separate from the gold itself?

Roman reading

Explanation

ShivGoraksh Simple English Explanation

A bracelet and an anklet differ in name, shape and purpose. Yet at the level of their material, each is gold. Ashtavakra uses this familiar observation to make nonduality more tangible: diverse appearances may be grounded in a single reality. His claim is not that the world has no practical distinctions, or that different persons and their rights can be treated as interchangeable. The analogy concerns underlying identity, while the distinctions required for care and ethical action continue to matter.

ShivGoraksh English Translation

Give up the ultimate division “this is me, that is not me.” Recognize all as grounded in the Self, and be at ease without compulsive mental constructions.

Roman reading

Explanation

ShivGoraksh Simple English Explanation

The mind habitually draws boundaries that help us navigate the world. Some distinctions are indispensable for safety, privacy and ordinary responsibility. The verse questions a deeper move: treating these useful categories as the final truth about who we are. In the nondual vision, awareness is not divided into competing ultimate substances. Being niḥsaṅkalpa does not require abandoning plans or thought; it means those plans no longer have to secure an inherently deficient self. The result is greater ease rather than confusion.

Through ignorance the world seems separate from you; in ultimate truth you are one. Apart from you, there is no independent being either bound to the world or outside it.

Roman reading

tavaivaajnaanato vishvam tvamekah paramaarthatah | tvatto’nyo naasti samsaaree naasamsaaree cha kashchana ||15.16||tavaivājñānato viśvaṃ tvamekaḥ paramārthataḥ | tvatto’nyo nāsti saṃsārī nāsaṃsārī ca kaścana ||15.16||

Explanation

ShivGoraksh Simple English Explanation

The verse makes one of the chapter’s strongest claims. Ajñāna is not simply a shortage of facts; it is a mistaken way of construing the relation between the Self and appearances. From the standpoint marked by paramārthataḥ—ultimate truth—the labels “worldly” and “not worldly” do not establish separate realities. This should not be used to deny people’s actual distress or to dismiss their needs. It is a statement about what is ultimately independent, not a license to abandon compassionate engagement.

ShivGoraksh English Translation

Knowing that the world is an appearance of mistaken independent reality, one becomes free of conditioning desires and abides as sheer luminous awareness, growing still as though nothing were lacking.

Roman reading

bhraantimaatramidam vishvam na kinchiditi nishchayee | nirvaasanah sphoortimaatro na kinchidiva shaamyati ||15.17||bhrāntimātramidaṃ viśvaṃ na kiñciditi niścayī | nirvāsanaḥ sphūrtimātro na kiñcidiva śāmyati ||15.17||

Explanation

ShivGoraksh Simple English Explanation

The word bhrānti is philosophically demanding. It need not imply that suffering can be ignored or that the sensory world is a fabrication we may safely disregard. It challenges the idea that appearances possess independent ultimate reality. Vāsanās are persistent tendencies that turn perception into attachment and repetition; becoming nirvāsana describes their waning influence. Sphūrti-mātra suggests a living radiance of awareness, not unconscious emptiness. The quiet described is non-clinging, not abandonment of care.

ShivGoraksh English Translation

In the ocean of becoming, the one Self was, is and will be. For your essential nature there is neither bondage nor a newly acquired liberation; fulfilled already, live at ease.

Roman reading

eka eva bhavaambhodhaavaaseedasti bhavishyati | na te bandho’sti moksho vaa kritakrityah sukham chara ||15.18||eka eva bhavāmbhodhāvāsīdasti bhaviṣyati | na te bandho’sti mokṣo vā kṛtakṛtyaḥ sukhaṃ cara ||15.18||

Explanation

ShivGoraksh Simple English Explanation

At first this sounds paradoxical: why speak of liberation if there was never bondage? Ashtavakra is shifting between the seeker’s experience of constraint and the claim that awareness itself is never tied down. Psychological confusion may change through learning, support and disciplined inquiry; in this philosophical view, such change does not manufacture the Self. Kṛtakṛtya points to the disappearance of existential incompleteness, not a claim that no practical task remains. Duties and relationships can still be met with care.

ShivGoraksh English Translation

O embodiment of awareness, do not keep disturbing the mind with competing resolutions and imagined alternatives. Settle into peace, abiding in your own nature as fullness and joy.

Roman reading

maa sankalpavikalpaabhyaam chittam kshobhaya chinmaya | upashaamya sukham tishtha svaatmanyaanandavigrahe ||15.19||mā saṅkalpavikalpābhyāṃ cittaṃ kṣobhaya cinmaya | upaśāmya sukhaṃ tiṣṭha svātmanyānandavigrahe ||15.19||

Explanation

ShivGoraksh Simple English Explanation

The capacity to weigh options is valuable. The problem is the mind’s endless production of mutually competing scenarios after useful thinking has ceased. Ashtavakra addresses that agitation, rather than demanding the suppression of every thought. Trying to force silence can itself become another struggle. The expression ānanda-vigraha presents the Self as fullness, not as a promise of constant emotional excitement. One can deliberate when needed and then release the insistence that every uncertainty must be eliminated.

ShivGoraksh English Translation

Even meditation should not become something to cling to; hold no idea in the heart as an indispensable support. You are the Self, already free—what new freedom could endless thinking manufacture?

Roman reading

tyajaiva dhyaanam sarvatra maa kinchid hridi dhaaraya | aatmaa tvam mukta evaasi kim vimrishya karishyasi ||15.20||tyajaiva dhyānaṃ sarvatra mā kiñcid hṛdi dhāraya | ātmā tvaṃ mukta evāsi kiṃ vimṛśya kariṣyasi ||15.20||

Explanation

ShivGoraksh Simple English Explanation

The final line is intentionally radical, and especially easy to misunderstand. It does not have to be read as a universal recommendation to abandon meditation or reflection. In context, Ashtavakra speaks to the tendency to turn every method into another possession of the spiritual ego. A practice may serve inquiry; clinging to it as proof that one is finally complete is a different matter. The Self, on this account, is not produced by one more act of thought. The force and audience of this instruction require careful philosophical and teacher-context review before public presentation.
