Nataraja means ‘Lord of Dance’. This form depicts Shiva dancing within a ring of flames, often holding the damaru (drum) and agni (fire). In a widely recognized South Indian interpretation, the drum evokes creation, the flame dissolution, and the dance the ongoing movement of the cosmos. A reassuring hand gesture indicates protection; the raised foot points to refuge or liberation. Beneath his other foot is Apasmara, associated with ignorance or delusion.
Nataraja’s image therefore joins cosmic process with spiritual meaning: change and destruction do not exhaust the picture, because release from ignorance is also central. Particular images vary in pose and attributes, so detailed symbolism should follow the specific artwork and tradition under discussion. It is a religious icon, not a literal diagram of physical cosmology.
