Shiva’s third eye commonly signifies insight that goes beyond ordinary physical sight. In devotional and iconographic interpretation it is linked with knowledge, alert awareness and the power to remove ignorance. Narratives of the third eye can also express Shiva’s fierce transformative power: insight is not merely observation but can overturn attachment or delusion.
These are related interpretations, not a single fixed code that every temple image uses identically. The eye is also an established visual attribute by which artists distinguish Shiva, as historical sculptures demonstrate. It is better to say ‘often understood to symbolize’ than to claim that every scripture assigns the same detailed meaning. The third eye in an image is not a practical instruction for attempting advanced yogic techniques.
