Shaiva Siddhanta is an influential Shaiva tradition of scripture, temple ritual and philosophical reflection. Historically, it draws on Shaiva Agamas; later Tamil-speaking Siddhanta thinkers also treated the Tamil devotional canon and philosophical writings as authoritative. Its older Sanskrit theological formulations typically distinguish Shiva (Lord), individual souls, and bonds or limiting factors. Liberation is connected with Shiva's grace and, in many traditional settings, appropriate worship and initiation.
Shaiva Siddhanta did not begin simply as a Tamil invention: early textual and institutional history reaches beyond the Tamil region. Yet its continuing influence is especially prominent in South Indian temple, liturgical and devotional life. There are meaningful differences between medieval Sanskrit Siddhanta and later Tamil philosophical interpretations, so neither should automatically stand for every version of the tradition.
