The Devi Mahatmyam (Durga Saptashati) (“Glory of the Goddess”), also called Durgā Saptaśatī and commonly associated with Caṇḍī Pāṭh, is an influential Sanskrit work included in the Mārkaṇḍeya Purāṇa. It portrays the Goddess as a supreme divine power through narratives of her manifestations, battles and blessings, and is especially important to many Shakta devotional traditions.
The title Saptaśatī refers to its conventional seven-hundred-mantra/verse recitation scheme; counts and internal textual arrangements require attention to the specific tradition and edition. Devotional recitation can include additional aṅga texts, but those adjuncts should not be silently counted as part of the thirteen-chapter narrative core. The work is religiously authoritative in its communities; its imagery and theology still admit multiple traditional readings.
