A mantra is a sacred utterance—sometimes a word, formula, verse or sequence of sounds—used in worship, meditation, recitation or ritual within particular Hindu traditions. Some mantras have a readily explained verbal meaning; others, especially seed (bīja) mantras, are interpreted through a specific teaching tradition rather than ordinary dictionary translation.
A mantra is not simply any inspirational sentence, nor does the word guarantee one universal method of use. Vedic recitation places importance on inherited text and accent; devotional practice may emphasize remembrance of a divine name; tantric lineages may attach initiation and other requirements. A trustworthy explanation therefore identifies the particular mantra, its textual or lineage context, and what kind of use is being discussed. An introductory definition does not itself authorize specialized practice.
