Ardhanarishvara is the form in which Shiva and Parvati are represented together as one body, conventionally with one male and one female half. It communicates the intimate unity of Shiva and Shakti, or divine consciousness and dynamic power, in traditions that use this philosophical reading. It can also express that apparently opposed aspects of existence belong to a deeper whole.
The exact theology differs among Shaiva, Shakta and other interpreters: some emphasize inseparability, some complementary powers, and some a nondual reality. The artwork should not be reduced to a claim that every Hindu tradition has identical teachings about gender or metaphysics. As an introduction, the essential point is that Ardhanarishvara offers a vivid visual expression of divine unity without erasing the distinct identities of Shiva and the Goddess in devotional practice.
