What is prasada in Hindu worship?

हिन्दी

Prasada (prasāda) literally relates to favour or grace and, in Hindu worship, often denotes food or another offering received as blessed after presentation to a deity. Sharing prasada can express gratitude and the relationship between devotee, deity and community. It may consist of a sweet, fruit, a portion of offered food or, in some settings, other blessed items.

Prasada is related to naivedya, but the terms are not entirely interchangeable: naivedya usually refers to food as offered; prasada refers to what is received as grace. Temple distribution practices differ, and ordinary food-safety considerations still apply. No particular food is guaranteed to heal illness or confer measurable benefits merely because it is called prasada.
